Dexpan in Action - Freezing Cold Weather on Sensitive Application

CHALLENGE

1.  It's the middle of winter and some concrete bases supporting a pipeline needed to be removed to perform some regular maintenance.
2.  Ensuring the concrete was demolished in a safe and controlled manner was crucial in the project planning and execution.
3.  Expansive grouts are sensitive to extremes of heat and cold and not normally advisable in materials that are any colder or subject to temperature fluctuations below -5 °C

PROJECT:  Pipeline maintenance during Canadian Prairie Winter
MATERIAL:  Concrete
WEATHER CONDITIONS:  High -11 °C   Low -25 °C

SOLUTION

1.  Build temporary hoarding around site and use heaters to address cold.
2. Use cold weather Dexpan 3
3. Store boxes of Dexpan at 10 to 20 degrees Celsius (50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit) until ready to use.
4. Ensure water temperature is 7 to 12 degrees Celsius (45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit)
5. Drill.  Mix.  Pour Dexpan.  Allow additional time for Dexpan expansive grout to work given lower temperatures (outside the recommended project specifications  (-5 to 10 °C )
