Dexpan Cold Weather Rock & Boulder Breaking

Using Dexpan to Break Concrete, Rock & Boulders in Cold Weather

Breaking rock and concrete in summer conditions using Dexpan is much easier and quicker as the warm conditions help support and speeds the cracking process.

Using Dexpan in cold weather or declining temperatures can prevent or significantly delay the breaking of rock or concrete.

When working on projects in cold weather it is crucial that you use the correct version of Dexpan for the material temperature and expected weather conditions.

Dexpan Type 3 is recommended when your rock or concrete temperature is -5°C  to  10°C.

Tricks of the Trade in the COLD

Dexpan cold weather

Especially in remote locations with challenging conditions, resourcefulness and "out of the box" thinking is sometimes required to get the job done on time and on budget.

Here is a sampling of ideas we have received from customers in the field:

Tip #1
Drill 1.5" diameter holes at 1 foot spacing (filled with Dexpan).  To speed up and assist cracking, drill 1/2 to 3/4" diameter relief/expansion holes in between the filled holes (leave them empty).

Tip #2
Store boxes of Dexpan at 10 to 15 degrees Celsius until ready to use.

Tip #3
Ensure water temperature is 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Caution: Cooler water will delay the cracking and DO NOT overheat the water as this could lead to BLOW OUTS.

Tip #4
Fill holes in morning so any natural temperature rise during the day supports the reaction vs pouring in afternoon when the temperature might drop overnight and work against the reaction.

Tip #5
After you fill the holes, cover with a tarp to help seal in the heat.

Tip #6
In extreme cold weather, time sensitive projects some customers have erected hoarding, used heaters and or concrete curing blankets to either raise the temperature of the rock to -5°C or to keep the material within the recommended temperature range.

Tip #7
PATIENCE.  It might take 48 or 72+ hours for cracking.  If the Dexpan is still clay-like and firm to the touch, it is still working.  When the Dexpan filled holes return to a powder-like consistency the reaction has finished.  Some customers, in freezing cold weather, have reported fracturing still progressing and cracks enlarging 4, 6 and even 12 days after filling the holes.
