Using Dexpan on a 10 Foot Tall Boulder

The following project is an interesting Case Study that demonstrates the:
1. power and effectiveness of Dexpan on a challenging 10 foot tall granite boulder
2. success and customer satisfaction even when instructions are NOT followed and ideal equipment is not readily available
3. value of patience and giving Dexpan generous time to react
4. ability of Dexpan to fracture a large boulder despite the customer
a) spacing the drilled holes 16-18" apart (recommended spacing is 10-12” apart)
b) only drilling holes 18" deep despite 10' tall boulder (recommended drill hole depth is 80% of boulder height)

PROJECT
Large approx 10’ high by 12’ solid granite boulder

LOCATION
Peggy’s Cove, NS

CHALLENGE
Very hard granite
Blasting not an option due to location and cost
At time only had easy access to 18” length drill bit

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
"This bedrock would’ve stopped our retirement home in it’s tracks. I looked into your product, researched and was very skeptical based on what we had to deal with, thought it couldn’t hurt to try but never expected the end result to be what it was.

I honestly wasn’t expecting to see any results based on the size of this piece of bedrock.

After drilling 24 x 1-1/2” x 18” holes at approx 16” - 18” apart, 5 hours later, I thought well at least I gave it my best try, hoping for a miracle.

That miracle became visible approximately 72 hours after Dexpan placement. The first crack was barely visible and I thought maybe that was it, and I would bring the excavator and breaker back in to give it another try. Before doing that I wanted to take another look.

The next day (96hrs later) we went back to check it out and the cracks were everywhere. I couldn’t believe it.

Anyway, we went back home and read up on your product some more and decided to give it more time. We went back today (120 hrs) and found even more cracks and much larger gaps. This is a huge rock! It actually cracked it all the way through in many places. I wonder what I will find tomorrow.....

Hope you like the pics. Amazing product!

I’ll be expanding our commercial GC business to include this service."
